Brooklyn Shrimp

Brooklyn Shrimp Salad 600x400 Brooklyn ShrimpThis recipe is named after my least favourite borough of New York City: Brooklyn! It may be the home of Lil’ Kim, but I just can’t bring myself to move there. I avoid it as much as I can. But for some reason, all the cool, good-looking smokers have inhabited it.

Homemade Hummus Social Chef 600x429 Hummus with Feta Cheese

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been conscious of the struggle for peace in the Middle East. As a kid seeing it, I never really understood what was going on. As I got older, I heard about peace talks, but they only seemed to result in more violence followed by another round of peace talks. Now it’s become such a constant thing that it seems as if war is a foregone conclusion. Have people just accepted war as the status quo?

Roasted Fennel with Pine Nuts

Roasted Fennel Pine Nuts Social Chef 600x428 Roasted Fennel with Pine NutsFebruary is so hard for me. It’s far enough from January that I’ve already failed at all of my New Year’s resolutions and close enough to summer that I begin to realize I need to lose weight. I feel stuck in limbo. Besides being Black History Month, I also like to call February Vegetable Month — a month where I try to incorporate as many vegetables into my diet as possible and honor all the black people that make music videos, clubs and Chelsea Lately so much fun.

Stracciatella Soup Veal 600x400 Stracciatella Soup with Veal Meatballs

Imagine going home to your Italian mother and telling her you’re going to marry the girl from the True Blue video, Debi Mazar. That’s what Italian farmer Gabriele Corcos had to do when he decided to marry the bitchy publicist from HBO’s Entourage. Like any Italian mother, Corcos’ mama’s main concern was how Mazar would wash, clothe and feed him. Just like she’s been doing for 30 years.

Fig, Eggplant and Feta Cheese Salad

Fig Eggplant Feta Salad social chef1 600x399 Fig, Eggplant and Feta Cheese SaladWhat is it about airports that turn people into complete lunatics? Whatever happens to someone the moment they enter the revolving door at JFK is completely beyond me. I’ve seen people go from fun-loving families to completely dysfunctional flight risks in a matter of minutes. People, life is only as crazy as you want it to be. If you decide ahead of time to make flying a huge issue, then that’s what you’ll get. Chill out, show up on time, bring your passport — and if all else fails, take a Xanax.

Foie Gras French Toast
October 4th, 2010|10 Comments

Foie Gras my social Chef maple1 600x400 Foie Gras French ToastHave you ever thought about what makes you a good person? You do the occasional charity walk to support your good friend’s cousin/uncle/grandmother to find a cure for whatever ails them. You’ve seen The Blind Side. You think about a career change into the nonprofit sector to “make a difference” — maybe you even dream of adopting a child from a third world country. These are all good things, and I also think about them. But I haven’t quit my job to work for justice or taken in a needy child… at least, not yet. It makes me wonder: What is stopping me from becoming this “good person?” Could it be an addiction to illegally downloading music? Lately, I’ve feared it may have to do with my foie gras obsession.

Notorious B.I.G. Welch’s Grape Juice Cocktail

Notorious BIG Welchs Grape my social chef 600x337 Notorious B.I.G. Welchs Grape Juice CocktailI consider myself lucky to have come of age in the mid ’90s, during the surge in hip hop music and culture. Hip hop really struck a chord with me because it had the kind of lyrics that anyone could relate to. Gone was the hardcore gangster rap that scared the shit out of me. In its place was this new, cool vibe about hot women, marijuana, fast cars and nice clothes. In what other genre can an artist finagle the word “thirsty” into “thirstay” to rhyme with “worst days” when rapping about Champagne? And my favorite of all the hip hop artists of that time was the renowned Brooklynite Notorious B.I.G.

Mascarpone sun dried tomato spread 600x400 Heather McDonald’s SpreadEagleHave you added Twitter yet to your list of addictions? Twitter has skyrocketed all the way up past cigarettes, chocolate, Adderall, vodka and Facebook on my list of “things I need to change”.  What a stupid idea, say something in 144 words or less and people respond just to get in your inner circle.

Cubanelle Peppers and Cheese Sauce

Cubanelle Chelsea Coslopus 600x337 Cubanelle Peppers and Cheese SauceDo Manhattanites really just not care?  I’ve never played sports, felt the need to win or ever be the best. I just wanted to just make it. I do have ambition, just not that crazy competitive streak that a lot of financial cokeheads have. Have you seen when a contestant on a reality show looses?  It’s as if their entire life is crumbling before them and they’re about to commit suicide. I never felt the desire to win until last weekend when I competed in the Brooklyn Hot Dog Cook-Off.
